Fort William I

In the 18th and 19th centuries, many plans were made for a fort on the Caberg, but they were never carried out. After Napoleon's escape on March 1, 1815, Europe felt threatened and Maastricht demanded immediate construction of a fort. Fort William I is named after King William I of the Netherlands.

Start at the entrance

Visit Fort William I and discover the political developments of 1793-1815 that made the rapid construction of the fort possible, after the tumultuous hundred days that ended with Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.

Decommissioning

In 1867, Maastricht lost its fortress status, leading to the dismantling of Fort Willem I. The fort became partly a shooting range, while the circular gallery and casemate were preserved for various functions. Discover this with your guide!

Firing casemates

Your guide will lead you through the large circular gallery at Fort William I with 136 gun emplacements and traces of World War II. Also enjoy a short walk in the dry moat; the casemate is currently in use by student union Tragos.
