Fort William IIn the 18th and 19th centuries, many plans were made for a fort on the Caberg, but they were never carried out. After Napoleon's escape on March 1, 1815, Europe felt threatened and Maastricht demanded immediate construction of a fort. Fort William I is named after King William I of the Netherlands.
